Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe has backed England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's decision to include former starlet Theo Walcott in his provisional squad for the World Cup finals.

Walcott rose to prominence at St Mary's and his form for the Saints prompted Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to agree to a January transfer window deal which could see the Gunners pay up to £12million for the 17-year-old.

The fact he has not even featured in the Premiership for his current club caused shockwaves through the football world when Eriksson included him in his squad for this summer's tournament in Germany.

However, Lowe is delighted for the player and is certain he will not let anybody down.

He told the club's official website: "We are all delighted to see Theo included in this squad. He is a smashing lad with great ability and I have no doubts he will go on to be a big star for England.

"We were very sad to see him go because of the loophole which means players cannot sign a professional contract until they are 17, but it is still a great boost to all those involved in the academy."
